My large painting for FC'07. This piece contains a lot of 'firsts' for me. I have painted water for the first time, and have decided not to shy away from painting urban architecture.
The character himself is very open ended..he can be anyone. A young teen, barely 18 and already drafted into the army, praying that he will make it home alive to see his friends again. A young man, praying that he will return safely to his pregnant wife so that his child won't have to be born having never known his or her father. An middle age man, praying that he will life to see his children graduate, go off to college, and get married. Praying he will live to see his grandchildren. He is everyone and anyone who has ever been in war, and despite 'No Pref' being etched into his dog tag where his religion should be, he proves that on the battlefield there are no athiests.

I thought the background was a photo.
I'm absolutely stunned.

Wow, this is just an amazing piece of art in the classical sense of the term. I'd highly recommend getting it professionally photographed for a limited edition print set later on, if that's something you'd do.
What are its dimensions and how long did it take you to do this?

The painting is 20x30 and took a few weeks to do, working on and off.
As for photographing it, I have a high quality dSLR and I photographed it myself. The image you see online right now is a photo, not a scan. I haven't scanned my work in ages actually, I preffer my camera over my scanner. And at a 6009x4006 file size, it's damn nice too ;) (stitched out of 4 photos ofcourse as my camera is only 8MP)

Great job with the painting, but I should point out that there hasn't been a military draft since 1970.

Wow...
This piece really hits home for me. As I was there during OIF I and OIF II. I love how you captured the "dinginess" of the small town/ village and how much truth it bares as to what the environment looks like. I commend you for your research.
The detail is just beautiful. Especially the oil in the water.
Are you selling prints of this? If so how big? I would very much like one.
Thank you very much for sharring this painting.
